I sit before the golden doors,
thinking,
being,
praying.
When I was little
I used to imagine voices speaking back to me,
gentle touches on my shoulder,
on my heart,
whispered tugs and assurances
that I was not alone.
And sometimes I still do.
But today,
I'm sitting
and the Sanctuary is dark,
the doors are closed,
and I can't help but wonder
if I'm just talking to an empty box.
thinking,
being,
praying.

And sometimes I still do.
But today,

and I can't help but wonder
if I'm just talking to an empty box.

three minutes. inspired by sitting in the Eucharistic chapel at the university Catholic center where I live, and seeing that the sanctuary lamp had blown out.
theological backstory: us crazy Catholics believe that Jesus Christ becomes truly present in the consecrated bread and wine at every Mass. if all of the Hosts aren't consumed, we put them in the tabernacle to save for later distribution, or for Eucharistic Adoration. there is a candle called a sanctuary lamp somewhere close by, and if there are Hosts in the tabernacle, it's lit.
